Jeff Emmerson
“I went into the place I once believed would end me and found the beginning of the man I was meant to become.”
Jeff Emmerson is an Ontario, Canada-based mental health author, Bachelor of Social Work student and emerging researcher in Laurentian University’s Indigenous Social Work program. A school-board professional with experience as an Educational Assistant and incoming Child and Youth Worker, he is preparing for graduate social work study and future clinical practice. His work is developing at the intersection of youth mental health, serious mental illness, justice-system contact, forensic social work, violence prevention and institutional response. His research interests examine how people move through schools, hospitals, community mental health services and justice settings, with particular attention to integrated youth services, service gaps, risk, rehabilitation, public safety, community reintegration, cold case review, predatory violence and the prevention of harm that is missed, repeated or left unresolved.He is also working on a memoir shaped by survival, loss, recovery and the people who helped keep him alive long enough to rebuild after the death of his brother Ryan by suicide and his own internal battles. A seed was planted in 2013 inside the inpatient mental health unit at Grand River Hospital: social work, service and a different kind of life. He is following it now, finishing what he started and letting the work speak for itself."This journey and Masters in Social Work degree mission is dedicated to my inner child, my family and those who helped me when I needed it along the way.
