Jeff Emmerson is a Canadian mental health author, Registered Social Service Worker (RSSW), Honours Bachelor of Indigenous Social Work student at Laurentian University and emerging researcher. His professional background includes school-board work as an Educational Assistant and Child and Youth Worker. He also contributes to mental health research as a volunteer Research Assistant at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). His interests increasingly centre on mental health systems, forensic and correctional mental health, rehabilitation and the pathways that support recovery and successful community reintegration.He is co-author of Beyond ADHD: Overcoming the Label and Thriving, originally published by Rowman & Littlefield in 2017 and now published by Bloomsbury Academic. His writing and research interests reflect a longstanding focus on mental health, systems of care and the ways people move through treatment, recovery and community life.His developing research interests include mental health services and systems, integrated youth services, serious mental illness, hospital-to-community transitions and forensic mental health. Within forensic and correctional contexts, he is especially interested in rehabilitation, community reintegration, mental health and justice-system contact and the factors that shape risk, recovery and long-term outcomes.“I went into the place I once believed would end me and found the beginning of the man I was meant to become.”His commitment to this work is also informed by lived experience. After losing his brother Ryan to suicide and later experiencing the mental health system firsthand, Jeff came to understand both its importance and its limitations. Those experiences helped shape the direction that followed: social work, mental health research and a commitment to stronger pathways of care, recovery and community support.He is now completing his social work degree while contributing to mental health research and building toward professional practice, graduate education and future work across mental health, forensic and correctional settings.
